Toongabbie is a Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. Toongabbie, one of Sydney’s oldest suburbs, is located 30 kilometers west of the city’s central business district and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. It is divided between the City of Parramatta, Blacktown, and Cumberland Council local government districts. “Toonie,” “Tonga Bay,” and “Bayside” are all nicknames for the suburb.

Toongabbie is said to be derived from an Aboriginal word that means “place by the water” or “water meeting.” It was named in June 1792 after Governor Arthur Phillip asked the local Aboriginal people what they called the place.

Toongabbie’s shopping district is on Aurelia Street, near the station, to the south of the railway line. For many years, a small independent suburban cinema, the “Rocket Theatre,” was located opposite the railway line near the overhead traffic bridge in the commercial district. The Piccadilly Centre, a small shopping centre, and the supermarket were developed in the 1960s between the Toongabbie Hotel and the Catholic Church. Many stores and takeaways catering to South Asian inhabitants began to sprout in Toongabbie in the 2010s.

There are multiple parks and recreational areas in Toongabbie. Fox Hill Golf Club is located on the western side of the suburb. McCoy Park is situated in eastern Toongabbie, next to the border with Seven Hills, and close to a small row of shops. It contains toilets, a large field, and a playground. It is located by the creek. Toongabbie Sports Club is situated along Station Road, including a bowling club.
