Carlingford is a Sydney suburb in New South Wales, Australia. Carlingford is located 22 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s central business district in the City of Parramatta local government region. It is found in the Hills District and Northern Sydney areas of Sydney, Australia.

Carlingford is located in the centre of three separate Sydney regions. The suburb is set in the Greater Western Sydney region’s north-eastern outskirts, on the south-eastern outskirts of the Hills District, and the western outskirts of Northern Sydney. It is part of the Northern Sydney region east of Pennant Hills Road, while the rest of the neighborhood is part of The Hills District west of Pennant Hills Road.

On July 16, 1883, the name Carlingford was formally accepted as the name of the Mobbs Hill post office. There are several stories about how the name Carlingford came to be. According to one story, local Frederick Cox overheard one of his employees comparing Mobbs Hill to Carlingford, County Louth, in the east of Ireland, near the current border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Carlingford was also named after Lord Carlingford, the British Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1847 to 1860.

Following World War II, Carlingford experienced significant urbanization as Sydney expanded. Established in 1959, James Ruse Agricultural High School is a testament to Carlingford’s agricultural history as well as the city’s growing urbanization, which quickly made the school, and its enormous farm, somewhat of an outlier among the suburb’s 1970s and 1980s housing.
