Aborigines on the southern side of Port Jackson or the Sydney Harbour called the north side warung, which meant the other side, while those on the northern side used the same name to describe the southern side.

Thomas Muir of Hutershill, a Scottish political reformer, purchased land in 1795 near the location where the north pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is now located. They are north of Gore Hill and became well known as St Leonards. In 1836, the township of St Leonards was laid out in what is now North Sydney and was bounded by Miller, Walker, Lavender, and Berry Streets.

North Sydney’s commercial district has the second-highest concentration of office buildings in New South Wales, with a significant presence from the advertising and information technology industries. Traditional advertising, marketing, and associated trades such as printing have dominated the area’s business life. However, they have been supplanted to a certain extent by information technology businesses.
